Windows 10

Enable Remote Assistance GPO firewall settings
Most online advice gives correct instructions to create a GPO to enable Remote Assistance for users. These work as instructed. However, configuring the GPO for firewall exceptions for a computer runs into a problem. In order to select the predefined firewall rules, the Remote Assistance function must be installed on the server; otherwise they are not available. The Remote Assistance function is not installed by default on servers.

Running GPRESULT
If you run GPRESULT in the regular command line, it will only show the results for the current user, not the computer. You must run the command line in administrator mode to get the computer and user results.

Windows 10 Update
When a feature update fails to download use the Windows 10 update assistant web site. This downloads directly and not thru the update app.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Had this problem for months with failure 0x80070002 and no listed solution worked. Plus, was unable to find the feature update to 1909 on the MS download site. Patches for 1909 but not the feature upgrade from 1809.

Note: feature update is the new term for what was called service pack. Released twice annually and installs new features.

For download of individual patches, search the Microsoft Update catalog https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Home.aspx

Create bootable DVD or USB for Windows 10 installation
Rufus does USB keys perfectly and quickly but does not do DVD disks. Most online references are to the “Windows USB/DVD download tool” which is no longer available. The current resource to use is the media creation tool at: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

Network Discovery Services
The following services must be running for the computer to appear in the network browser.
DNS client
Function Discovery Resource Publication
SSDP Discovery
UPnP Device Host

Stopping the Function Discovery Resource Publication is enough to remove the computer from the browser. The computer may still share files and be accessed if you know the IP address but simply does not appear in the browser. This reduces user confusion and screen clutter when accessing network resources but still allows administrators to utilize resources not apparent to users. I’ve found the DNS client is running but the other 3 are frequently disabled in situations where a new computer is put on the network and files are shared.
